James Metcalf and Ana Pellicer, both important sculptors, choose not to live in Paris (where James worked early in his life, cheek by jowl with Constantin Brancusi, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, René Magritte, and other seminal modern artists), New York (where both have exhibited their work in stellar galleries and museums), or Mexico City (where Mexico's hippest and most active artist's circle burgeons). Instead, the Metcalf/Pellicer household has built a better mousetrap in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán. The world beats a path to their door in the heart of this tiny community of artisans.

In 1950, James went to Majorca, where he studied ancient Mediterranean metallurgy and created the illustrations for poet Robert Graves' Adam's Rib. In the mid-1960s, James left Paris for Mexico, where he had heard that pre-Hispanic coppersmithing techniques were still in use. Told that what he searched for only existed in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán, he set off to investigate. By the late 1960s, James Metcalf and Ana Pellicer, his former student, were living and working in Santa Clara.
Their early explorations were related to el cazo de Don Vasco, the 16th Century cooking kettle introduced to Santa Clara del Cobre by Don Vasco de Quiroga. The copper cazo, which ranges from stove-top size to immense (large enough to cook an entire cut-into-chunks pig) is still used wherever carnitas or candy are made in Mexico. It's safe to say that all of Mexico's copper cazos come from Santa Clara.

When James Metcalf arrived, Santa Clara del Cobre offered no luxury to the artist accustomed to life in Paris, New York, and other cosmopolitan centers. Houses in the town were little more than hovels. There was no indoor plumbing. Although nearly every man in town worked copper as a livelihood, with few exceptions the only items produced in the talleres (workshops) were cazos. All of the cazos were formed with a thin edge which was rolled around an iron wire to finish the piece. Metcalf, using clay pots from the nearby state of Colima as examples of shapes, taught the Santa Clara smiths the design and construction technique of the thick edge.

James Metcalf, extraordinary Renaissance man--elegantly knowledgeable, elegant as well in speech, dress, and manner. His work, sometimes classified as both surrealist and abstract expressionist, is an important force in 20th Century metal sculpture.

A few of the hundreds of tools in James Metcalf's work room. He crafted many of his own tools to accomplish the techniques of particular works. Until Metcalf's arrival, the coppersmiths of Santa Clara del Cobre had never seen the highly polished hammers commonly used in urban metalsmithing.
Metcalf's thick edge copper technique, completely different from the techniques used at the time in Santa Clara, revolutionized Santa Clara's artisanal copper production. The smiths slowly began to produce hollow ware other than cazos, including jugs, kitchenware, and other decorative work.

Metcalf and the artisan coppersmiths of Santa Clara del Cobre received the commission to create the Pebetero Olímpico (cauldron which holds the Olympic Flame for the duration of the games) for the Olympic Games to be held in Mexico in 1968. The enormous cauldron, adorned with repousée decoration of maíz (corn, representing the life force of Mexico), brought world-wide attention to the traditional artisans of Santa Clara and their work.

Ana Pellicer arrived in Santa Clara del Cobre fresh from a privileged life in Mexico City and New York. Santa Clara, a community bound in rigid traditional gender roles and attitudes, did not respond well to her desire to work in copper. Talented, young and beautiful, her life in the small town was frequently difficult. Nevertheless, committed to the philosophy of 'mexicanidad'--the internalization of being Mexican in every aspect of life, including their art--both Pellicer and Metcalf felt deeply obligated to live and work in the Santa Clara community of artisans.

The actual sculpture, commissioned by Mexican industrialist Francisco Trouyet, is now part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City. La Máquina Enamorada weighs 250 kilos and measures nearly two meters high by nearly two meters wide and a meter and a half deep.
Over time, Pellicer to some degree gained the trust of the townspeople. In 1975, she and a group of artisan coppersmiths worked together to produce the commissioned piece La Máquina Enamorada (the Machine in Love). Enormous and enormously complex--made from nearly 300 kilos of solid copper ingot--the piece became the largest forged work ever made in Santa Clara and the first artisan-made work accepted by the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City.

La Ulama or La Pelota que Rebota (The Ball that Bounces), by Ana Pellicer. The hammered copper decorative ring represents the cartwheel ruff, a heavily starched collar that was muy de la moda española (very stylish with the Spanish) during the time of the conquest of Nueva España. The black rubber ball represents the Purhépecha fire ball played in the pre-Hispanic game called Ulama. Pellicer collected the resin for the ball in the traditional method, from Michoacán rubber trees. Exhibited in Denver, Colorado, as part of a complex installation, the piece represents ideas that transcend ancient times as traditions and native peoples bounce between cultures.
One of Ana Pellicer's lasting and tremendous accomplishments in Santa Clara has been incorporating women of the community into artisanal copper making. Despite intense opposition from many male artisans, Pellicer taught jewelry-making to some artisans' wives, who began to create jewelry that subsequently has won prizes at the community's annual copper fair.

James Metcalf and Ana Pellicer founded several schools in Santa Clara del Cobre. In 1973, they received the support of the Ministry of Popular Culture and opened La Casa del Artesano. La Casa del Artesano offered artisan training to Santa Clara coppersmiths apart from the traditional training they received as apprentices in local talleres. Later in the 1970s, La Casa del Artesano closed.

In 1976, Metcalf and Pellicer began teaching classes in their home. All the while, deep tensions continued to exist, not only within the artisans' community but also between ancient and modern techniques and styles of work, dress, jewelry, and, at its essence, community life.
Metcalf and Pellicer later founded, under the auspices of Mexico's Secretaría de Educación Pública (Secretary of Public Education) what became the most important school for artisans in Santa Clara del Cobre and arguably in all of Mexico: the Adolfo Best Maugard Center for Technical/Industrial Training #166 (Cecati #166). Teaching different techniques of metalsmithing and jewelry making at all levels of production, the school incorporated traditional and European forging methods, taught blacksmithing, casting in both lost wax and sand, machine tools, lathing, enamel work, stone cutting, and electroplating. All of those techniques opened multi-faceted new horizons of artistic and commercial opportunity to Santa Clara artisans.
In 2002, a Michoacán branch of Mexico's teachers' union took over directorship of the school, displacing Metcalf and Pellicer. The move was highly politicized and its consequences spilled over into extreme community tensions and division between the copper artisans and the former directors of the school. Many members of the artisan community continued (and continue until today) to consider Metcalf and Pellicer to be outsiders, even after their more than 35 years' involvement in the life of Santa Clara del Cobre. The pain and stress of this division are still abundantly apparent in both Metcalf and Pellicer's recounting of its incidents.

Higo 10 Cents Store, owned by the Murakami family and a social hub in Seattle's Japantown, has a long and fascinating community and family history. Meet Me at Higo welcomes younger generations to connect with and explore what it means to be Japanese American.

Impressive personal photos, journals and artifacts are included in this traveling exhibition. Today, Higo 10 Cents Store (or Higo Variety Store) is KOBO at Higo and is still located at 604 South Jackson in Seattle's International District.
The book by Ken Mochizuki, also entitled Meet Me at Higo: An Enduring Story of a Japanese American Family, accompanies the exhibition and is available at the Wing Luke Marketplace and at KOBO at Higo.

ALFREDO LANGARICA AT GALERIA PACIFICO, Jan. 25th and Feb.1^st

One of the most anticipated events at Galeria Pacifico every season is their solo exhibit of new paintings by the Guadalajara based artist, Alfredo Langarica, this year featuring cocktail inaugurations with the painter in attendance on January 25^th and February 1^st, from 6:00 to 10:00 PM. Both of these are part of the original Art Walk on Wednesdays in the Historic Zone of downtown Vallarta, where Galeria Pacifico is located at 174 Aldama Street, above the Caballito del Mar Gallery and just 75 feet uphill from the landmark Los Palomas Restaurant on the Malecon.

Although Langarica has painted in various styles over his 26 year career, his great skill with the brush is always evident, as is often his sense of humor. He might paint a ballerina who is far too big to dance or an angel of the "fallen" variety working a street corner, but in both cases the textures and blending of colors are masterful and his common use of tiny objects in the background and edges capture the imagination. Alfredo is one of the best known and most highly collected painters in Guadalajara, Mexico`s second largest city, and his inclusion in several museum exhibitions and collections throughout Mexico attest to his skill. His work may also be found in many condos and villas in this area as well as in private residences throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. His twenty new paintings in this exhibit range in size from 8 x 10 inches to 6 x 8 feet, and although the exhibit will remain on display through February 13th, Galeria Pacifico always features a variety of Alfredo Langarica`s paintings.

If you don't hear from me it's just that I usually start at the beginning of the alphabet and then get tired about half way through and think...ah "F" it.

I am struggling here more than I have ever had in terms of adapting. I am just not getting the kind of support I need from the hotel. They seem willing to let me flounder out here on my own, at another hotel, (The Sun and (quik) Sand Hotel)and it's not really a 'room' I hope to be living in for the next 5 months. Walls are paper thin, and a connecting door to the guests next door. (One can hear everything) Phone conversations, TV, and lots of loud talking.

Last night, one of my non-working nights, (I have one a week and 2 everyother week) I had the Westin send me a hotel car to transport me. I was 'off', and wanted to go to my favorite Jazz/Music club, Shesha, near the hotel becuz a friend, drummer Adrian De Sousa, was playing there, so I had a driver from Westin come and get me.

I had a quick dinner at the WEstin hotel in my fav restaurant, Prego, and walked the short dangerous stretch to Shesha. At the same time I was walking the street, there was an Indian wedding going on, and that particular stretch was loaded w all sorts of wedding coaches, and horses and musicans and dancers, on coming traffic, and bycycles (with no lights) and motor scooters, and huge, ugly imposing trucks all honking, all not in lanes.
One really takes their life in their hands walking this short stretch, about one half block to the fun lane called ABC FARM, where all these cool clubs and restaurants are.

It's such an assault to ones senses, becuz it's so inhumane compared to the laws for pedestrians in the states. I really don't know how people survive it. But, in India pedestrians have no rights. Other than 'stay out of the way'. I brace myself and cling to the side as much as possible. Then when a 'side walk area' becomes possible, it's full of broken concrete, huge ditches they're digging up for some up and coming sewer system, and chunks of hard dirt. I'm glad I brought my cowboy boots!

Well, it's a new day, and yes you're right. I think the Universe is telling me something.
Stand up for your rights, and don't let the Indians push you around. One friend I met here told me " don't forget what you came from!" I said 'what's that?'
He said "you descended from a country of TYRANTS and bullies. (Yea)Don't be PUSHED around by them! You're an AMERICAN!!!

I liked hearing that. (He's a New Yorker hanging around Pune, and we met at Shesha)
I only wish I had had the power within me to have NOT MOVED OUT of my pleasant hotel room at the Westin that one night they asked me too after singing. Just to see what would happen. But I caved. Things would be very different now.

But, they're like crazy people. It seems ironic that such a 'classy hotel, prided on it's hospitality' would do THAT to their visiting 'artist'! I shared it with several guests too. I loved watching their incredulous responses, but also feel badly that I'm relagated to such a standard by them.

The doorbell to my room here at the Sun and Sand is like electro shock. The most weird sound, and the telephone is even worse. Ah Hotel life.
Things are seeming to deteriorate for me. Also the stress of getting around. I'm getting good at rickshaw 3 wheeler transport. But, I don't take it at night. At night I take a hotel car.
Visited the Osho Ashram yesterday and it was pleasant except I had to go through the 3 hr morning intro to the place. I couldn't track all the new info I was getting: "white socks on the "raw" marble mediation rock. (you must buy a pair of white socks, luckily they have a shop on the campus where you can purchase them for about $1.25) I made the mistake of buying red socks. (I don't know what's wrong with me today?)

I also had to buy a maroon long robe like dress. Because the computer was glitching in my registration I was told to 'HURRY AND GO BUY YOUR ROBE'. I bought the first one I found, and it was so ugly, I felt terrible in it. It reminded me of something my mother use to wear. Empire waiste, loose, hanging large shortish sleeves, where you could hide a gun or a puppy, and so matronly. I felt so ugly that day.

I brought so much makeup I can't organize it, and when I go to put it on, I can't see. Lighting is dim. Everywhere. I also feel like I can't read anything either.
It's like a frustrating dream here where you're trying so hard, yet nothng, I mean nothing works out right. I am thinking...have I turned a corner and now, I'm unattractive and there's very little I can do to improve? It's frightening. It's OUT OF CONTROL.
I need to get through this. Not sure what to do.

I was thinking a lot about people who've passed a way during the mediations. And how I could feel their energy. Some interesting thoughts. I should write them down and send them in a blog for special friends. When you alter yourself enough through jumping around and shaking, (an exercise they have you do) you actually can talk to the dead! It was a lot of fun. I got in touch with a few people I'd been hoping to converse with. It was charming.

How is the snow? I hope yr warm enough. While visiting the Osho ashram yesterday I was one of the only people swimming in this big beautiful pool with all the meditators hanging around the pool edge...zoned out, smoking, eating organic food...it's a real international scene. Met some cute people from Argentina. I should hang out there more often. But, I have a lot of issues with my gig

Since I'm the only one stuck in the U.S. with more to do than drink margaritas and wax poetic about the fresh air at sunset I'll keep this short.

Billy is a painter from Seattle living in Jalisco, child of the sixties, on the fringe, savvy businessman, amateur philosopher, etc.

Allan is a painter from Portland, living Ajijic on a trial basis, child of the sixties, on the fringe, photographer, British accent from the old county, amateur philosopher, etc.

Cathy is a fashion designer from Portland, living in Ajijic on a trial basis, child of the sixties, on the fringe, professor, not interested in staying up to the wee hours discussing amateur philosophy.

It seems it's been a long time since I saw you last, probably because you have been in Mexico. It must be years since you took off for the sun, so I'm assuming things are going well?

To catch you up, we closed Ouch My Eye in Seattle last February and my wife and I spent the last year traveling around the world like vagabonds (www.7stones7continents.com). We returned from South America at thanksgiving and immigrated to Kansas, which is like Mexico, but without the palm trees, beaches, tequila, good food, warm winters, pretty women, and vibrant culture.
Anyway, I'm writing to introduce you to my Uncle Al who I think you might enjoy meeting. He's been a painter in Portland since the 70's and looking to semi-retire in Mexico with my Aunt. In fact, they are just outside of Jalisco as I write 'chilling' out for the winter. I'm sure they are busy drinking Margaritas and watching sunsets, but I bet they would re-arrange their schedule to pop by for a studio visit if you were so inclined?

Dear billy,
Now that Chevron has been found guilty once again for intentionally dumping a massive amount of toxic oil waste in the Ecuadorian Amazon, the company has become particularly desperate to explain why it refuses to take responsibility. Chevron's attempts to greenwash its image have gone into overdrive, spinning and twisting the facts beyond recognition. Which is why we've taken on the task of helping Chevron's spokespeople give a bit more shameless oomph to their absurd excuses for why their company puts profits over people.
Since we put out the call for your creative spoofs last week, we've received thousands of submissions for over-the-top excuses that Chevron can use. But we're sure there are plenty more where those came from.
We've teamed up with our friends at Rainforest Action Network to compile some of the most ridiculous excuses Chevron has made over the years in this video, to give you a little inspiration. These are truly some of the stupidest moments in Chevron PR:
As you can see, even Chevron's PR hacks have struggled to come up with valid excuses for why they refuse to do the right thing in Ecuador. Check out the video and help spread it around to shine a light on Chevron's refusal to take responsibility for its environmental and human rights catastrophe in Ecuador.

For those of you who missed out on the "early" opening of the show THIS ISLAND EARTH back in December, I want you to know that there are a couple of events this week that can remedy any feelings of loss you may have suffered.
This Thursday heralds the official CAPITAL HILL ART WALK and Christian,David and myself will be at the gallery to welcome the crowd and shepherd them through the exhibition. It would be lovely to see your good selves amid that crowd.

FRIDAY THE 13TH was too tasty and auspicious a date to ignore in the context of alien visitation and abduction and have elected to host a more personal event at the gallery that evening.
THIS ISLAND EARTH consists of work by Christian French, David Kane and Tim Marsden and their different interpretations of the UFO experience. Come and marvel at Christian's lonely UFO photographs as it navigates the harsh and unforgiving American landscape; ponder David's oddly familiar landscapes populated with spaceships of extraterrestrial origin and have your photo taken in front of the backdrop of the Anomalous Experience Abduction Machine before perusing the Low Tech delights of Tim's Sci-Fi boxes of duality.
So, just to recap. Thursday Jan 12th 5-8PM (and beyond?) is the Capitol Hill Art Walk. The artists will be in attendance but I have to say later rather than earlier in my case at least.

The first is the regular "Radio Etiopia" monthly mix of goodies from the post rock, ambient, electronica side of things. It carries the rather unseasonal title of "Last Stop Before Ruin" but is really quite a peace-loving little thing with contributions from the likes of Massive Attack and Mogwai, with some psych and dub thrown in for good measure.

Chevron Found Guilty in Ecuador - Again!

Huge Victory for Plaintiffs as Appeals Court
Affirms $18 Billion Pollution Judgment

Did you hear the stellar news ringing in 2012? The 18-year legal battle over Chevron's horrific legacy of pollution in the Ecuadorian Amazon has just taken a major step toward justice, as an appeals court ratified an earlier court levying an $18 billion judgment against the company.

The decision gives hope to some 30,000 indigenous people and farmers who have been seeking a cleanup of toxic waste sites, clean drinking water and adequate health care.

Ecuadorians have won a big victory, but the campaign is far from over.

Chevron has made clear what its response will be – more legal stonewalling. The company is mustering ever-larger armies of international lawyers to try to drag the case out in as many legal forums as possible. In the Ecuadorian case alone, Chevron submitted 220,000 pages of documents and 64,000 chemical samples, in what the judges complained was an attempt to physically overwhelm the legal process.

And of course the company is still waging a public-relations offensive in the United States, with its spokespeople spinning the story in a desperate attempt to make the company seem like the victim of greedy Ecuadorians and their U.S. supporters.

Unfortunately for Chevron's flacks and lawyers, such excuses are pretty lame.

Amazon Watch has been helping lead the campaign for justice in Ecuador for years, but we must admit we do feel for Chevron at such a fraught moment. So much so that we've teamed up with our friends at Rainforest Action Network to help the company be a bit more imaginatively shameless and callous. Won't you join us?

Why we get wasted on New Year's

Our Dec. 31st hedonism is the last remaining relic of an ancient Roman carnival of debauchery

Soccer balls bulge beneath the men's polyester skirts and blouses to create exaggerated breasts and derrieres. Their masked faces are resplendent with rouge and eye shadow, wild like plumage. Trumpet, trombone and tuba players garbed in maroon polyester suits play rousing banda, and the men shake their tousled pink and blond wigs. Their dance is a lewd, thrusting affair, accompanied by the glad-handed twirling of tuxedoed dance partners dressed as evil businessmen, who leer at the crowd with sinister rubber masks.

Incongruous on the stately town square of Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, the baile is but one of many unexpected mini-fiestas we've encountered as we travel through Mexico during the winter holidays. The grotesque dance is a far cry from the yuletide tableaus we've come to expect in the U.S., but perhaps no less bizarre: adult men dressed as women with huge asses versus adult men dressed as "Christmas elves"? Who's to say? Although I never found out exactly what the dance in Dolores Hidalgo signified, it is likely a holdover from the wild holiday traditions of ancient Europe and Mexico.

Across ancient Europe, the yuletide holidays were a free-for-all, made dicey by role reversals: The poor invaded the homes of the rich, men dressed as women, and the lord bowed to the peasant. The 12 days of Christmas, from Dec. 25 to Jan. 7, were set in the mold of the Roman holiday Saturnalia: The holidays were a period of truce, when old grudges should be forgotten (at least temporarily), and anger swallowed. But despite all this brotherly love, the Christmas season had a sinister playfulness, similar to the original concept of trick-or-treating. Echoing Saturnalia's public ridicule of society's laws and customs, rowdy bands of peasants invaded the manor, demanding food and drink. In exchange, the lord received his subjects' blessings and goodwill for the coming year.

Sometimes revelers brought the booze with them: In the British Isles, wassailing was a popular and alarming part of Christmas and New Year's Eve. The word "wassail" comes from the Old English "was hal": "be thou hale" or "be healthy." The phrase was originally a greeting, but naturally the boozy Brits soon turned it into a toast : "was hale!" followed by the proper reply: "drink hale!" A poem written in 1066 describes a Saxon toast before the Battle of Hastings:

Rejoice and wassail
Pass the bottle and drink healthy
Drink backwards and drink to me
Drink half and drink empty.

By the 17th century wassailing was a holiday tradition. Girls gussied up in holiday finery would carry a dubious alcoholic punch (usually spiced beer with apples) from door to door. The wealthy were expected to drink a toast and offer the wassailers payment in return. Far from the beatific carolers of today, the mobs were known to get unruly: Wassailers would prank or menace householders who refused them booze or money.

British colonists brought wassailing and drunken "trick-or-treating" to the shores of America, where all walks of life adopted the New Year's Eve traditions. A French visitor to the New York colony was alarmed when the house was accosted at 4 a.m. by a mob of children, servants and slaves who fired a musket and threw stones at the windows. The Frenchman was tired and attempted to ignore the racket, but finally the nature of the situation was explained to him: "Mr. Lynch got up and came into my chamber to tell me that these people certainly meant to do me honor, and get some money from me. I desired him to step down and give them two Louis; he found them already masters of the house and drinking my landlord's rum. In a quarter of an hour, they went off to visit other streets, and continued their noise till daylight."

No doubt the Frenchman's next day was also eclipsed by rum. The Dutch had introduced a more civilized but equally drunken New Year's Day tradition of open houses, in which city dwellers opened their doors to strangers and friends alike. New Year's Day tables were laden with cherry bounce, coconut jumbles, rum-soaked doughnuts, honey cakes and fruit in white-wine jellies, and visitors could expect hot toddies, rum punches, eggnogs, peach cordials or sangria. Guests were expected to eat and drink at each stop, which led to great booziness.

At the time, these New Year's traditions were just a small part of the rowdy American Christmas season, which retained its vaguely sinister European flavor. The two-week season had its abstemious detractors: Puritans railed against Christmastime as a pagan abomination and banned the holidays in their townships. Cotton Mather himself wrote disapprovingly: ""Feast of Christ's Nativity is spent in Reveling, Dicing, Carding, Masking, and in all Licentious Liberty … by Mad Mirth, by long eating, by hard Drinking, by lewd Gaming, by rude Reveling… "

Mather no doubt was equally horrified by New Year's Eve, which always marked an apex of drunken revelry. This is true around the world and throughout time: Although the New Year is celebrated from June to January and from Tallahassee to Timbuktu, almost all cultures have used the passing of one year to the next as an excuse to really party. Take for instance the fine old Sumerian tradition wherein the king had public sex with the high priestess of Ishtar, symbolizing the conception of Ninkasi, the goddess of beer.

In ancient Mexico, the New Year was an exception to draconian Aztec laws. During the rest of the year, only specific sects were allowed to drink: You could hit the pulque (fermented agave pulp) if you were a nobleman, an extremely old person or a pregnant woman; for the young able-bodied commoner, drunkenness was punishable by death. An exception to this code was allowed every fourth New Year for Pilahuana, or "The Drunkenness of Children," a festival in which godparents adorned young children with parrot down, pierced their ears, and accompanied them to watch their first human sacrifices. Afterward, everyone got wickedly drunk.

In Mexico today, people no longer go in for drunken kids and human sacrifice; a typical New Year's Eve celebration consists of a late dinner with the family, followed by a midnight Champagne toast, amazing castillo fireworks and partying. Many families still practice the Spanish custom of eating a grape and making a wish for each chime of the countdown to the New Year. Other Mexican New Year's superstitions include physically sweeping out the old year with a broom and wearing different-colored underwear to bring on various types of luck in the new year: white for good spiritual vibrations, red for luck in love.

The modern Mexican take on celebrating the passing of the old year and the coming of the new is representative of most countries': a mix of superstitious ritual and heavy drinking. The Japanese say goodbye to the old year in December with "forget the year" drinking parties. The New Year's holidays, or Oshōgatsu, are more sedate family affairs that reflect the universal belief that actions during the first days of the New Year will influence the coming year: Debts are paid, disputes are settled, and houses are cleaned. Families gather to eat soba noodles for longevity and wealth and drink taruzake (sake aged in a cedar barrel) and toso, a medicinal sake that is supposed to ward of sickness in the new year. In accordance with an ancient imperial edict that the use of alcohol is prescribed by heaven, Chinese New Year traditions involve a similar mix of ceremonial drinking and eating. Food and alcohol are served to the spiritual guardians of the household, and parties toast with cognac.

In the United States, New Year's Eve is the only night of the once bacchanalian winter season that still retains its hedonism, with the expected outcome of serious inebriation. When it comes to New Year's Eve, Americans are short on superstitious traditions and long on drink. In modern America, New Year's Eve is the drinking holiday (which is saying something when one considers the vast estuaries of beer consumed on the Fourth of July, St. Patrick's Day and Cinco de Mayo). But New Year's Eve is special because it offers a certain carte blanche for stupid behavior. New Year's Eve is the Las Vegas of American holidays.

Americans were not immune to the worldwide rise of Champagne in the 18th century. During the belle époque, holiday advertisements touted Champagne as the drink for celebrations. By the 20th century, a New Year's toast was hardly complete without Champagne. Washington socialite Mrs. Evalyn Walsh McLean took things to the next level with her 1937 New Year's Eve party, where guests consumed 480 quarts of Champagne.

Champagne was queen, but in true American fashion, ethnic enclaves added their own flavor to the party. A guest celebrating New Year's Eve 1939 with Cuban friends recorded: "We spend several hours in a small café, eating Cuban sandwiches and mixing Cuba Libres with Ronrico and Coca-Cola. There is a jook-organ which offers a selection of eight records of Cuban music, and two records of American music. There are couples present who dance the rhumba again and again. Estrella and Pedro dance the rhumba also. Apparently they are both enjoying themselves." If the guest had wandered a few buildings down, he might have found Austrians eating marzipan pigs and toasting with Feuerzangenbowle (aka "flaming fire tongs punch"). Scottish immigrants brought Dundee cake, black buns and Hogmanay punch (apple cider and whisky) to the table. African-Americans prepared lucky New Year's Day dishes such as black-eyed peas and collard greens, but eventually fell prey to the Champagne dream. A 1983 issue of Black Enterprise magazine recommends pairing Champagne with soul food, stating: "Only Champagne can reign like royalty over gala affairs and celebrations. Only Champagne can take ritual holidays and refashion them into moments of pure joy."

Although it's debatable that Champagne is a necessary ingredient for moments of pure joy, one thing is certain: New Year's Eve offers a rare excuse to engage in the sort of carousing that we once viewed as a significant and inalienable yuletide right. Drink hale!

Welcome to the NEW Wood Studio

Just when you thought Pratt Fine Arts Center couldn't get any better... we just did! Pratt has proudly served as a resource to artists in the community, providing access to advanced processes, tools and instruction that would otherwise be hard to come by. In that tradition, we are very excited to open a whole new woodworking program this winter.

The beautiful new studios include nine workbenches, amazing lighting, and a layout and lineup of equipment chosen for their industrial quality and advanced safety features. We look forward to growing into the space over time and developing a comprehensive curriculum and rental program. As it grows we will offer basic woodworking classes, joinery, wood carving, wood steaming and lamination, wood turning, 3D design, mixed media and wood sculpture classes, furniture making and veneering. We'll also offer cross disciplinary classes such as a wood panel and stretcher class for painters this quarter, metal spinning, wood jewelry classes and Master Artist workshops.

It has always been the teaching artists that make Pratt stand out; teaching technical skills while fostering creativity. The Wood Studio has a great group of instructors this quarter to do just that, so check out our winter catalog for more information and stay tuned for new offerings planned for this spring and beyond.

This was going to be a card with the dog in front of the Christmas tree. Instead Felipe died Wednesday, the winter solstice.
Monday he and I went for our usual slow walk around the lake and someone said what a handsome dog he was. In the evening we helped Karolyn decorate her tree.

Tuesday morning he couldn't get up. The vet found lymphona throughout his body. What Jackie O had, she said He could live maybe a month or less in pain and maybe a month or more in pain with chemo so we said goodby to him.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

Christmas Eve for Center Children: Thanks to Marcia Lavender and her team of busy elves for doing such a fantastic job of creating gift bags, collecting, purchasing, sorting and wrapping gifts suitable for all the children and arranging their annual Christmas Eve Party at the Center. .

Mariposa Project Textile Program Update ("Watching children and youth change before our eyes!" The Mariposa Project has been working hard this past three months in assessing the viability for a Textile Vocational Training Program at the Love in Action (LiA) children's shelter in Chapala. Project Director, Bernadine Janzen notes that "We have had wonderful support from the community of donations of irons, ironing boards, threads, material, etc. For those who did not leave your names and numbers when dropping off your contribution to the program, please accept our heartfelt thanks! We have determined that there is great viability for this project over the next 3-5 years."

The Mariposa Project understands that to develop a love for any hobby or potential career, interest and learning needs to begin at a young age. With that in mind, they began a pilot, Stage I program, for boys and girls 6-12 years old in August, 2011. The group is working on craft level skills making such things as pin cushions, beading, decorating baskets, etc. There was a great turn out of children. The Stage II level began in October, 2011 and is working with girls 13-19 who reside at LiA. They are working with scraps of materials donated. Two sewing machines were donated and repaired or purchased.

The Project plan of five years for both Stage I & II is methodical and developed to encourage pride and excellent work in textiles, improving classroom behaviors and social and work skills in a classroom environment. The plan, in partnership of Ajijic Rotary, Love in Action, Dunes Manufacturing and the Mariposa Project, aims at a successful manufacturing business with maintenance and sustainability. Bernadine states "We would be happy to sit down with you individually or with your group and explain our plan which will move us towards a Textile Vocational Training Program at Love in Action in the year 2015."

Textile Program Needs: First, volunteers are needed who are interested in learning while assisting with 6-12 year old boys and girls under supervision of our instructor, Tuesday from 5-6 p.m. for 8 weeks. Secondly, volunteers are also needed who are interested in learning while assisting with 13-21 year old girls under supervision of our instructor, Saturdays from 3-5 p.m. for 8 weeks.

In addition, supplies are needed: 8x10 Whiteboard with markers/eraser; 3x5 Cork board; Any tools or materials for knitting or crocheting. Donations may be dropped off marked "Textile Program" at the front gate with Antonio the Gate Guard. If you have donations but are unable to drop them off, Mariposa Project will come pick them up. If you are interested in helping with instruction or need someone to pick up your donations, please contact, Bernadine Janzen, Director Mariposa Project, in San Juan Cosala at 01-387-761-0360 or email; tattacbsj@gmail.com.

New Van Donated to Love in Action Center: Thanks to the State of Jalisco's Department of Human Services and an anonymous donor, recently the Love in Action Children's Center received a brand new 15 passenger van. The expense of the van was shared equally between the State and the private donor.

The 2011 Nisson 4-cylindar gas efficient van will be a great help to the Center in saving funds on gasoline as well as on upkeep of their old van. The van will be used to transport children to their schools and for outings when scheduled. The Center founder Anabel Frutos extends her thanks and that of the entire Center for this generous gift. Anabel concluded, "Next year we're going to apply for a 22 seat van."

This is the final week for Repossessed, with works by Andy Coolquitt, Jason Dodge, Shelley Jackson, Brian Jungen, Rachel Harrison, Zoe Leonard, Daniel Pflumm, Fred Wilson, and Sam Taylor-Wood. We will reopen with our winter exhibition in late January.

Repossessed
Western Bridge takes a second look at our first show, Possessed. Opening in April of 2004, Possessed connected the activity of collecting with the more demonic sense of the title: being taken over by another person or spirit. As Western Bridge prepares to close in the summer of 2012, our thoughts turn to our beginning. We revisit the original themes of possession and the possessed while taking stock of how our ideas about art, our interests in artists, and our understanding of Western Bridge have developed.

URGENT TESTIMONY: "We're on the verge of genocide"

Dear billy,
We just received an urgent call from two Catholic priests in Achuar territory in the northern Peruvian Amazon, concerned that Canadian oil company Talisman Energy is fomenting severe divisions between indigenous communities, creating a real risk of conflict.

Listen to their testimony and take action
I have just returned from a trip to Canada with Achuar leader Peas Peas Ayui where he made a direct demand of Talisman CEO John Manzoni: leave Achuar territory. Regardless, Talisman continues its relentless search for oil in the region, resorting to dangerous industry practices: divide and conquer.
In their testimony Padre Diego and Padre Bola, who have worked in the region for a combined total of 60 years, recount signs of oil company bribery, ecological disruption, death threats, and even the first cases of sexually transmitted diseases as the situation around Talisman's operations on the Pastaza and Morona rivers deteriorates.
Now is the time for action: The Achuar have fought hard to keep their rainforest home free from oil drilling, but over the next six months Talisman will be deciding whether to move into production.
Write to Talisman now and demand they respect the Achuar people.
