State Department Daily Briefing Question taken on Tibet
On January 9, 2012 the Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State said that the United States is "seriously concerned by reports that three more Tibetans have self-immolated over the past few days. Since March, this brings the count to some 15 Tibetan Buddhist self-immolations in China. We have consistently – the U.S. Government has consistently and directly raised with the Chinese Government this issue of Tibetan self-immolation."   Continue reading...

ICT: Tibetan self-immolations continue & spread in Tibet into 2012
In the morning of January 8, Sonam Wangyal, a respected religious figure in his local area in Darlag county, Golog (Chinese Guoluo) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province (the Tibetan area of Amdo), died committing self immolation. On January 6, two other Tibetans self-immolated in Ngaba (Chinese: Aba). Exile sources said the two Tibetans, Tsultrim and Tennyi, both around 20 years of age, set themselves on fire in the courtyard of a hotel in Ngaba town.  Continue reading ...

On December 9, Chonjor, a Tibetan man in his twenties was beaten to death by police after he was stopped for driving a motorbike in the town of Labrang (Chinese: Xiahe) in Gansu, eastern Tibet.  Continue reading ...

Violent confrontation between Chinese and Tibetan students in Chengdu
On December 14, a mob of over 3000 Chinese students went on a rampage, beating Tibetan students and breaking into their dormitories and classrooms at the Railway Engineering School in Chengdu leading many to be hospitalized. Beijing based Tibetan writer Tsering Woeser wrote in her blog that the students reportedly shouted "Beat a Tibetan, Get an extra credit."   Continue reading ...

ICT: EU goes public on China's failure to commit to human rights dialogue
On December 22, the Delegation of the European Union to China's website published a statement that said "the EU deeply regrets that the second session of the EU-Dialogue on Human Rights in 2011 will not take place as previously agreed" and that it is "disappointed by the absence of an answer by the Chinese side to its proposals for dates."  Continue reading...

On December 18, Vaclav Havel, the Czech playwright who spent three-quarters of his life under conditions of dictatorship or totalitarianism, led a political revolution, and held four presidencies in two countries for 13 years, died at the age of 75. Only several days earlier, Havel met the Dalai Lama who was visiting Prague at his invitation.   Continue reading ...
