FW: The December Mixes

Hello Everyone:

Hoping the dark days of December are filled with sparkle and joy and a good pint or two of nog for you all!

May I try and make a small contribution to your holiday fun with not one, but three, mixes for your aural stimulation this month. Here they are and here goes:

The first is the regular "Radio Etiopia" monthly mix of goodies from the post rock, ambient, electronica side of things. It carries the rather unseasonal title of "Last Stop Before Ruin" but is really quite a peace-loving little thing with contributions from the likes of Massive Attack and Mogwai, with some psych and dub thrown in for good measure.

Here's the link:

You'll find front covers and track-listings at the end of this e-mail or on the websites.

The second is Vol. 1 of a small series of special mixes and/or regular CDs of weird and wonderful cover versions of (reasonably) well-known songs that was inspired by accidentally hearing a Scottish band do a daft, po-faced version of a hip-hop smash, and a bunch of old West Coast hippies taking a stab at Fairport Convention song.

Vol. 1includes the aforementioned Scottish band deftly rendering hip-hop ridiculous, a selection of Nick Drake songs sliced, diced and minced by others and much, much more!

You can find "Rumpled Covers, Vol. 1; A Cornucopia of Strange Bedfellows" at Radio Etiopia as a mix and here's the link:

Or you can hit http://radioetiopia.podomatic.com/ and go to the front page and scroll through all the latest mixes posted at Radio Etiopia. Allow me, again, to give my personal recommendation to check out those by the founders of the podcast, Tony Justerini and Anatoly Brooks. They really are superb.

You'll find mine under my "DJ" name of Fray D. Jay!

The final offering this month is Vol. 2 of the covers series. This one, entitled "Rumpled Covers, Vol. 2; A Cool to Tepid Array of Strange Bedfellows", can be found on my blog, Grounds for Appeal. Not a mix, just a CD's worth of the good, the head-scratching and the dodgy that you can download by clicking the "File Sonic" link there. Find out which European leader's wife has a penchant for singing David Bowie songs when not engaged in affairs of State, thrill to Leonard Cohen's guilty secret as he covers a ditty from a most unlikely source and discover whether or not it's actually possible to rehabilitate a Toto song enough to be able to listen to it without an immediate eruption of bile!

 Here's the link:

Hope you'll go over there for a visit and stay a while. Lots more music there, along with movies, news and rants and raves.

Just posted - a video of what must be the the year's most miraculous escape from impending doom. Worth bumping yourself over there for that. It's to be found here:

Along with sordid details of Newt Gingrich's little-known movie career. Or not ....

Anyway I hope you'll have a moment to listen to a track or two and may I wish each and every one of you a Merry Xmas and a very Happy and (for Gawd's sake!) Prosperous 2012!

See you in twelve!

Neil

P.S. Here are the covers and track-listings for the three collections:
